Welcome to my website. I am an art educator, Professor Emerita and former chair of art education at University of Illinois, and former (two-time) chair and longstanding member of the University of Illinois Faculty Senate Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure. I am also former Editor of Visual Arts Research journal, and former co-President of the National Art Education Association Women's Caucus. Prior to my tenure at the University of Illinois, where I taught for 23 years, I taught art, K-12, graphic design, English, and journalism in Illinois and Florida public schools for several years. As a teacher in the public schools, I had the opportunity to work with urban, rural, ethnically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse students. My university courses, workshops, books, scholarly papers, and presentations have focused on the power of art education in facilitating the creative personal expression of people of all ages, enriching the aesthetic life of local communities, and fostering civil society. This work has been recognized in various ways, including the National Art Education Association Women’s Caucus June King McFee Award, the NAEA Higher Education Division Art Educator of the Year Award, the United States Society for Education through Art National Edwin Ziegfeld Award, the UIUC College of Fine and Applied Arts Teaching Excellence Award, the UIUC Vice Chancellor's Teaching Scholars Award, the UIUC Center for Democracy in a Multiracial Society Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Arts Challenge America Grant.
